Communities Leading Animal Welfare
'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, except for our 50 million rescue cats" 🤣🤣🤣
Well. What a year it has been.
We continue to search for Blacky and Winnie, we always will. We actively follow up on any possible sightings. Hoping for a Christmas miracle 🙏
We have met a huge amount of wonderful people this year. Many we now call friends. Passionate about Animal Welfare and wanting to see the UAE gain recognition for being a leader in all things animal related.
I'd like to think we can unite individuals and communities in our common goal of driving change. Releasing the burden on individuals, transient to this country, who have spent their salaries and savings on rescuing abandoned and dumped animals. All to often to the detriment of their mental wellbeing.
After engaging with rescuers and communities, we've come up with a list of things we think are needed as soon as possible:
1. Active community TNR programs where each community manages their stray population with free or government subsidised TNR, vaccine and microchipping, using microchipped.ae for what it was designed for. A centralised database.
2. Robust education programs, delivered by community leaders.
3. Veterinary clinic support. Although some vets offer good rescue rates, some of the ailments found in the stray populations can cost thousands. We would like to see vets, willingly help rescuers with 'at cost' rated treatments.
4. Approved, authorised, dedicated and maintained feeding stations.
5. Registered, trained volunteers managing feeding stations throughout Abu Dhabi communities.
6. Involve all municipalities under one standard of animal welfare.
7. Overhaul current animal welfare laws. Publish prosecutions to let the residents of the UAE know that animal cruelty will no longer be tolerated.
8. Close down unauthorised pet shops which are globally seen as an archaic and unnecessary practice today.
9. Register and audit legal breeders, enforcing a globally recognised practice standard.
10. Government subsidised and means tested veterinary care clinics, comparative to RSPCA and PDSA in UK and other countries.
11. Awareness. Let the world know the UAE is stepping up!
We've experienced so much sadness, interspersed with moments of joy over this past 12 months. From cats dying and dogs being purposely killed to amazing stories of survival and resiliance.
These stray animals did not choose the life they have. They don't want to fight for their survival every day. They don't want to be driven to breed. The don't want the ailments, illness and disease they suffer due to neglect.
Ultimately, this is a man made disaster. Its our responsibility to help keep them safe, well fed, sterilised and free from suffering. They want a lap, a cuddle and to experience love. Everyone, humans and animals have a right to feel loved, wanted and at a bare minimum, safe.
We have embarked on several projects to help this cause and whilst still rookies, we now consider ourselves to be its advocates.
The Authority of Social Contribution - Ma'an, worked hard with us to develop our program and get it approved for funding. Our Community Animal Care Program will kick off in January 2024.
We need as many people as possible to register as volunteers. There will be many roles and responsibilities. Experienced volunteers, training volunteers to trap stray animals. We will need volunteers to take stray animals to allocated vets. Coordinators for logistics and admin. We will need temporary fosters to house our program rescued strays who would be suitable for adoption. We need experienced speakers to conduct short and informative animal care workshops at our adoption day event(s). Experienced adoption day event managers, social media gurus, animal welfare advocates. There will be roles for everyone.
Moving forward, we hope to gain momentum for funding for communities to have their own programs to bring the situation under control.
It won't happen over night. This problem has taken a long time to reach where we are today. Its going to take dedication, perseverance and a lot of hard work to achieve by working together.
Some other things we've been up to....
Our personal colony has grown to 37 which meant we had to move to a larger property to support them and other initiatives we have on the horizon to assist rescuers.
Dave made a record 😱
We sold over 260 calendars for tnr funding.
KCLB facebook group has over 1400 members ❤️
Microchipped is reinventing itself all the time to keep up with technology and the changing demands of animal protection, also gaining many strategic partners with the same vision.
We're having meetings, attending events, networking, on calls and social media most of the time now, pushing to highlight the situation on the ground.
Our Food to Strays initiative is a slow burner at the moment. We just need a couple of lucky breaks to elevate the prospect of getting animal food to where it is needed.
Food to Strays is run by a team of volunteers who are so dedicated. We're super proud of them all for the time and effort they tirelessly put in. How can it not succeed 🙏
Dave is steadily building the MCPet website where we will eventually launch with all profits going to establishing The ARC.
The ARC is our ultimate goal.
We've listened to what rescuers need. We've taken advice and learnt as much as we can. We will build The ARC. Brick by brick 💪
We will establish our NGO in 2024. This is in conjuction with our strategy to build The ARC.
All of this has come from the cruel practice of pest control relocating our boys on the order of a thoughtless neighbour.
We made a promise to our boys. We won't give up on them or all the other poor animals in the same situation.
